SuperTux is the first game that I played on Linux.
Having said that, I must note that I recently understood what does the game more playable to me. I ran into a gaming engine, and attached examples which had the "generic platformer" game. It didn't excite me.
The clue is the storytelling. Lemmings were great because the story about lemmings group behaviour and allegedly doing suicide, the nostalgia of Amiga and early PC. The penguins doing the same lack the storytelling. It's just not the same...
That's why I have spent many more hours on playing Winter Challenge than SuperTux, not even knowing why I always fall out of the track (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copy_protection)
I just wish there was a game closely resembling the Battle Mode of original Super Mario Kart. None of the later parts come even close and I’m not aware of any clones. (I know there are some mods with more levels but those are kind of lame; sorry.)
Have you looked at super tux kart? I haven't played it, but my kids were obsessed with it for a while. I didn't spend much time watching, but just walking by it gave me major Mario kart vibes. I guess much closer to Mario kart 64 then super Mario kart, but if you haven't tried it out it's definitely worth a check out
Last I checked it didn’t have Battle Mode arenas at all. Not interested in races.
It has a battle mode nowadays (and has for several versions now). Somewhat more recently, they added support for network multiplayer in version 1.0. I recommend you take another look and see how much it's improved if you're still interested.
Also, the engine has gotten a lot fancier, and there are new tracks that take advantage of the engine capabilities pretty well.
Oh cool thanks will take another look!
Super Tux Kart does have battle mode somewhat similar to the Mario Kart balloon fight though not as polished (and many of the arenas are a little too large in my opinion). It also has a unique soccer mode.
Is emulation off the table?
Need, I did not realize there was an Android version of super tux now. Definitely going to try it out. Would be really cool to see it added to f-Droid!
there's a website as well: https://www.supertux.org/
it has a video trailer for the new release and also a longer development summary vid
Linux: just for fun. Congrats to this release. I vividly remember playing all sorts of Linux games when I was younger. Helped me to feel not as lonely as I was.
Good to see this hasn't been cease and desist-ed by nintendo.

why is there still a 0 as the major version? come on, it's a stable release, and previous releases have been stable too. why not just drop the 0 as many other applications have done and call this version 7.0 showing people that this is a game with a long development history.
