I have very strong, probably controversial, feeling on arstechnica, but I believe the acquisition from Condé Nast has been a tragedy.

Ars writers used to be actual experts, sometimes even phd level, on technical fields. And they used to write fantastical and very informative articles. Who is left now?

There are still a couple of good writers from the old guard and the occasional good new one, but the website is flooded with "tech journalist", claiming to be "android or Apple product experts" or stuff like that, publishing articles that are 90% press material from some company and most of the times seems to have very little technical knowledge.

They also started writing product reviews that I would not be surprised to find out being sponsored, given their content.

Also what's the business with those weirdly formatted articles from wired?

Still a very good website but the quality is diving.

For the curious, this acquisition was 18 years ago.

I read ars technica during undergrad over 20 years ago now. It complemented my learning in cpu architecture quite well. While in class we learned old stuff, they covered the modern Intel things. And also, who could forget the fantastically detailed and expert macOS reviews. I’ve never seen any reviews of any kind like that since.

I dropped ars from my rss sometime around covid when they basically dropped their journalism levels to reddit quality. Same hive mind and covering lots of non technical (political) topics. No longer representing its namesake!

What blogs do you subscribe to for tech stuff in your RSS feed? I still have Ars but I have to weed through a lot of stuff like the political articles. Really like just pure tech like how it used to be with the old Anandtech.

If you find a nice pure tech feed I would jump for joy. Too many places have been overtaken with nonsense.

I subscribe to some news site for hackers... "Hacker News" I think it's called. Not RSS, but I've never used that anyway. Google should be able to find it for you.

Oddly enough it's not the first time I've seen their perceived recent drop in quality blamed on this. Just weird that it's happened twice - wonder where this narrative is coming from.

It's not just gotten to the point it can't be explained away. The best technical articles on the site have been the bio-horror shock material they pump out every month, and it's been that way for years.

When they started doing car reviews where "GM didn't pay for this car review, they just paid for a car review." everyone should've clued in.

Boeing merged with McDonnell Douglas almost 30 years ago, but that's still a major reason they suck today.

I don't think many would say Ars Technica fell off dramatically circa 2010.

Buying a news property is also not comparable to a merger of near equals.

The transformation has been very slow I believe. They didn't really intrude too much the first few years. But maybe I remember wrong.

It gets pretty bad at times. Look at the image captions gushing about the "roomy interior" of a vehicle that doesn't even exist! I actually wrote in to say how disappointed I was in this ad/press release material, and the response was "That was not a VW ad and we were not paid by VW for that or any other story". I find it interesting that they only denied the ad part, not the press release part...

It is sad that this is what journalism has come to. It is even sadder that it works.

Wirecutter was a good premise, but now it and everyone copying it are untrustworthy.

It feels like the human version of AI hallucination: saying what they think is convincing without regard for if it's sincere. And because it mimics trusted speech, it can slip right by your defense mechanisms.

I think it's smart to be skeptical of any "review" site that depends on affiliate links for income. The incentive is no longer to provide advice, it's to sell you something. Anything. Click the link. Good. Now buy something. That's right. Add it to your basket. It doesn't matter what you buy. Yes, higher priced items are better. Checkout. We get our sweet kickback, nice.

Unfortunately, every review site uses affiliate links. Even organizations with very high ethical standards like Consumer Reports use them now. At least CR still gets most of its income from subscriptions and memberships. I guess that's something.

This is the real reason I don't trust sources that make money off affiliate links. The incentive is to recommend the more expensive items due to % kickback.

Wirecutter is part of NYTimes and depends on crosswords for income.

I haven't always agreed with them and sometimes the articles are clearly wrong because they're several years old, but they're usually good.

(I think I last seriously disagreed with them about a waffle maker.)

Wirecutter does an interesting thing where - I don't necessarily disagree with their review of the products they chose. But I'm baffled why they didn't choose to review the overwhelmingly most popular item in the category. Those omissions are what seems the most suspect to me.

Sometimes at the bottom of reviews they mention a lot more products than appeared in the main review. Not always though. Not disagreeing with the decline in reliability but just stating because this can be easy to miss and when it is done I do find it helpful.

Wirecutter has stated in the past, maybe it was on their podcast, that they get a lot of their income from affiliate links. They have done some fairly suspicious things like their “gift guide”s for Christmas which are little more than long lists of products with affiliate links. Same for their “sales guide” for Black Friday, and there have been other cases. That doesn’t mean their reviews are bad, I just approach them with a certain amount of skepticism.

Seems in line with their original purpose still. They seemed to always want to be a source to suggest a product that is good enough for a consumer, to help avoid decision paralysis, and avoid fake products that are both expensive and flawed. Suggesting a list of gifts that are suitable and not deeply flawed is exactly what a lot of people are probably looking for around Black Friday.

Wirecutter still seems pretty good for stuff you aren't really expert on or have strong opinions about. But that was true of Consumer Reports in the old days too. Not saying it's perfect but, especially for low-value purchases, you probably won't go too far wrong.

Any good idea will be copied by those with lesser motives.

And any good execution will be sold off to those who don't care about your motives.

They are just lazy / understaffed. It's hard to make $ in journalism. A longstanding and popular way to cut corners is to let the industry you cover do most of the work for you. You just re-package press releases. You have plausible content for a fraction of the effort / cost.

Unfortunately, government is like that were most bills are written by lobbyists and barely if at all modified by the actual congress critter sponsoring it.

Reminds me of Quanta's egregious article Physicists Create a Holographic Wormhole Using a Quantum Computer[0], a blatant ad for CalTech/Harvard/MIT. One where even an article posted the same day by the NYT[1] quoted Scott Aaronson[2] questioning the sensationalism, yet took months for Quanta to post an editor's note... Interestingly even ArsTechnica was even able to fight the hype posting only a few days later[3].

I really think a lot of these organizations have lost touch. The entire premise of their existence relies upon the trust of the readers. That trust relies upon the idea that the writers are consolidating and summarizing expert opinions. Any egregious error like this (especially when they are slow to correction) pose a death sentence to them. It's a questionable error like they were rushing to get first to print (having early access even) yet didn't seem to consult experts other than those on the team.

I think unfortunately this type of pattern is becoming more common and I've defintiely noticed it on sites like ArsTechnica too. Maybe it's that my technological expertise has increased and so I can more easily detect bullshit, but I think the decline is real and not unique to ArsTechnica nor Quanta. It feels like the race to the bottom is only accelerating and there are larger ranging impacts than just the death of specific publishers.

It's been this way for years. I know because years ago they defended the practice and explained that the car companies don't pay for a specific review, they just pay for to sponsor stories in the genre of case reviews. And the worst part? The infernal comment section was lauding them.

Automotive journalists are in a weird category in almost any publication. They're all dependant on manufacturers providing press units and attending press events that include comp for travel and hotels.

AFAIK the only real exception is Consumer Reports.

There was one “journalist” for the New York Times that reviewed cars, and he could never say anything positive about EVs - even to the point of warming consumers of the gloom that is EV. But after digging into his history, it was found he also published a lot of positive fluff pieces for the oil industry lol!

They are basically the embodiment of the fact that sites and organizations don't matter, but individuals do. I think the overwhelming majority of everything on Ars is garbage. But on the other hand they also run Eric Berger's space column [1] which is certainly one of the best ones out there. So don't ignore those names on tops of articles. If you find something informative, well sourced, and so on - there's a good chance most their other writing is of a similar standard.

Ars is already a anti-Elon echo chamber. I stopped paying my subscription after a moderator endorsed a commenter issuing a (almost certainly empty) death threat to Elon.

Or many other sources. If you’re writing about Space, you kinda need to cover SpaceX. If you’re opening critical of everything the owner says, pretty soon you won’t have any sources at SpaceX to give you the insights you need to do your job. I get the impression that the space field is pretty small, so you might not want to burn too many bridges.

Also, mission lengths can cover decades. In this case, it might be best to have a short memory when the story has a long time horizon.

This is even more true when politics has a rather short time horizon. Musk decided to jump into public politics at a time when the nation is substantially more divided and radicalized than it's been in living memory for most of us, to say nothing of being fueled by a media that's descended into nothing but endless hyper partisan yellow journalism. It's not really a surprise that things didn't work out great. But as the 'affected' move on to new people and new controversies, perspectives will moderate and normalize over time.

And, with any luck, Elon can get back to what he does well and we can get men back on the Moon and then on Mars in the not so distant future.

Elon just needs a wild party to blow off steam.

I think the fact that they one of the last places surviving from that generation of the Internet says a lot. The Condé Nast acquisition may have been a tragedy, but they managed to survive for this long. They’ve been continuously publishing online for about 30 years. It’s honestly amazing that they’ve managed to last this long.

Yes, it’s very different than it was back in the day. You don’t see 20+ page reviews of operating systems anymore, but I still think it’s a worthwhile place to visit.

Trying to survive in this online media market has definitely taken a toll. This current mistake makes me sad.

Their review of MacOS 26 is 79 pages when downloaded as a pdf, so they still sometimes have in depth articles. But I agree that that level of detail isn’t as common as in the past.

100% agree. I still have Ars Technica and Slashdot in my RSS feed list, but both are paused. Every now and then (maybe once a month) I'll take a peek, but it's rare that I'll find anything really worthwhile. About 10% of the content is slanted to push their desired narratives, so objectivity is gone.

I still had Slashdot in my RSS feed, purely out of inertia. I don’t even interact with it much other than occasionally marking it as read. This was the push I needed to unsubscribe from it.

Everyone's dancing around the problem. People refuse to pay the cost of producing high quality news. Advertising doesn't come close to cutting it.

You can see a new generation of media that charge subscribers enough to make a modest profit, and it's things like Talking Points Memo ($70 base cost per year), Defector ($70 or $80 I think), The Information ($500), 404 ($100), etc.

ArsTechnica has had subscriber tiers for quite a while. I am one. I’m not sure how many people subscribe or what their numbers look like, but I’d hope that Ars will be able to still be able to keep going in whatever the new media market looks like.

Josh at TPM has actually been quite open/vocal about how to run a successful (mildly profitable) media site in the current market. I think we are seeing transitions towards more subscriber based sites (more like the magazine model, now that I think about it). See The Verge as a more recent example.

Dr Dobbs was pretty good until almost the end, no? If memory serves me well, I recall the magazine got thinner and more sparse towards the end, but still high signal-to-noise ratio. Quite the opposite of Ars T.

Huge debt of gratitude to DDJ. I remember taking the bus to the capital every month just to buy the magazine on the newsstand.

I would go to the library on my bicycle to scour for a new copy of DDJ as a 10 year old.

I had dreams of someday meeting “Dr. Dobbs.” Of course, that was back in the day when Microsoft mailed me a free Windows SDK with printed manuals when I sent them a letter asking them how to write Windows programs, complete with a note from somebody important (maybe Ballmer) wishing me luck programming for Windows. Wish I’d kept it.

Unfortunately, this is my impression as well.

I really miss Anandtech's reporting, especially their deep dives and performance testing for new core designs.

The main problem with technology coverage is you have one of 3 types of writers in the space:

1. Prosumer/enthusiasts who are somewhat technical, but mostly excitement

2. People who have professional level skills and also enjoy writing about it

3. Companies who write things because they sell things

A lot of sites are in category 1 - mostly excitement/enthusiasm, and feels.

Anandtech, TechReport, and to some extent Arstechnica (specially John Siracusa's OS X reviews) are the rare category 2.

Category 3 are things like the Puget Systems blog where they benchmark hardware, but also sell it, and it functions more as a buyer information.

The problem is that category 2 is that they can fairly easily get jobs in industry that pay way more than writing for a website. I'd imagine that when Anand joined Apple, this was likely the case, and if so that makes total sense.

When Andrei Frumusanu left Anandtech for Qualcomm, I'm sure he was paid much more for engineering chips than he was for writing about them, but his insight into the various core designs released for desktops and mobile was head and shoulders above anything I've seen since.

It's a shame that I can't even find a publication that runs and publishes the SPEC benchmarks on new core designs now that he is gone, despite SPEC having been the gold standard of performance comparison between dissimilar cores for decades.

There are still places that benchmark, but mostly for commercial apps like Puget Systems in the earlier post. Phoronix can also be useful as well for benching open source stuff.

I wouldn't put much trust in well-known benchmark suites as in many cases proprietary compilers, a huge amount of effort was put into Goodhart's law optimizing to the exact needs of the benchmark.

What places on the internet remains where articles are written by actual experts? I know only of a few, and they get fewer every year.

One other thing people might like about the conversation is that it has a bunch of regional subsections so it isn't overrun by US news like a lot of news sites. Well outside the US section of course. I know I personally appreciate having another source of informed writting that also covers local factors and events.

That may be for the technology and science sections. But the politics section is clearly pushing an agenda with regard to the current US administration - even though it is an agenda many people online might agree with. That section is not global, it is US-centric, and it heavily favours the popular side of the issue.

I understand from your comment, please correct me if I misunderstood, that you oppose Jews building houses in the West Bank.

The West Bank is a part of the state of Israel that was occupied by Jordanian forces from 1948 to 1967. It was then captured by Israel and many Israelis, many of whom lived there before it was occupied by Jordan, moved (back) there.

The West Bank was settled by both Arabs and Jews before 1948 - for literally thousands of years Jews had lived there. In 1856 many more Jews and Arabs began moving there due to changes in Ottoman law meant to encourage settlement of the area (the Ottomans needed tax revenue). It should be noted that Jerusalem was Jewish majority even before the Ottoman land laws changed in 1856. In 1936 there was a large Arab slaughtering of Jews in Hebron, so many Jews were evacuated from Hebron. In 1948 the Arabs rejected the UN partition plan, and started a war. Israel won that war, and thus became the sole successor state of Mandatory Palestine. Jordan occupied part of that successor state (the West Bank). In 1952 (I may have the year wrong) the Arab league declared that no Arab assistance would be provided to those displaced in the war, because only the suffering of those displaced will cause the destruction of the Zionist Entity. In 1964 the Soviets advised a group to represent the Arabs of the West Bank, the Gaza strip, and those displaced in 1948, and that group adopted the name Palestinians to refer to the populations it represents. Israel conquered the Jordanian-occupied territory in 1967 after Jordan attacked Israel, two months later the Arab League adopted it's policy of No Peace, No Negotiation, No Recognition of Israel. In 1995 the West Bank was divided into separate areas. Predominantly Arab areas were given autonomy for self rule, under the Palestinian Authority (mostly PLO) with the intention of all parties to see the establishment of an Arab state called Palestine after final borders and other issues are agreed. Predominantly Jewish areas have Israeli rule redeclared in three year cycles, pending final border agreements. Every single final border solution has been rejected by the Arab side, who have also employed extreme violence both in rhetoric and in actions.

Where in all this are the Jews who live in the West Bank a reason to "lose all faith" that Israel has good intentions. Israel's first intention is to secure the safety of her citizens, just like any other nation. Israel has committed to, and taken reasonable steps to, establish a separate state for those who demand Arab rule.

Yes, I enjoy "both sides" coverage when it's done in earnest. What passes for that today is two people representing the extremes of either spectrum looking for gotcha moments as an "owning" moment. We haven't seen a good "both sides" in decades

I'm not pointing out a contradiction. I am pointing out that this site - which otherwise seems great - it heavily promoting the popular-online side of a very controversial subject.

It looks like they know how to grow an audience at the expense of discourse, because those adherent to the popular-online side will heavily attack all publications that discuss the other side. Recognising this, it is hard to seriously consider their impartiality in other fields. It's very much the Gell-Mann Amnesia effect.

That’s interesting to me because my trust in Consumer Reports was heavily eroded when I read a review on computer printers that was basically all wrong and wondered if any of there other reviews could possibly be trusted.

Consumer reports is really good at following their methodology, but you really need to read and understand their methodology, because it's often completely worthless.

A perfect example is toilets - I don't care at all how well a toilet flushes golfballs, because I never flush golfballs.

I'm not from the US either, but I see much vitriol against their current president and his policies. And not a single article in support.

When one side says it's raining and the other side says it's sunny, it's not the journalist's job to represent both sides. It's their job to look out the window.

Odd, the Conversation has a version from France (that covers French news), Canada (that covers Canadian news), an African version (that…get this covers African news) and many other editions. I think fantastical isn’t totally inaccurate, and I’m not being snarky (for once). The personal observations and sometimes colorful language has been something I like about Ars. Benj in particular, with his warm tributes to BBSes. Or Jim Salter’s very human networking articles. The best stuff on Ars is both technically sound and rich with human experience. “Fantastical” taken to mean something like, capturing the thrills and aspirations that emerge from our contact with technology, seems fair I think.

I’ll be interested in finding out more about just what the hell happened here. I hardly think of Benj or Kyle as AI cowboy hacks, something doesn’t add up

It has a second definition which means something like "unbelievable in its strangeness/perfection", which can be used to imply that a real thing feels made up.

I agree that it's not a good word choice when describing a thing that could actually be fake, but you could describe a view from a mountain as fantastical even though it was 100% real.

I confess I find the growing prevalence of these sorts of errors on HN dispiriting. Programming requires precision in code; I’d argue software engineering requires precision in language, because it involves communicating effectively with people.

In any single instance I don’t get very exercised - we tend to be able to infer what someone means. But the sheer volume of these malapropisms tells me people are losing their grip on our primary form of communication.

Proper dictionaries should be bundled free with smartphones. Apple even has some sort of license as you can pull up definitions via context menus. But a standalone dictionary app you must obtain on your own. (I have but most people will not.)

I used to read it daily. Even continued for a few years after the acquisition. But at this point, I haven't looked at it in years. Even tend to skip the articles that make it to the first page of HN. Of course, most of the original writers I still follow on social media, and some have started their own Substack publications.

I got very tired of seeing the same video thumbnails over and over.

It seemed like at some point they were pushing into video, of which there were some good ones they put out, but then they stopped. They kept the video links in the articles but since there are only a handful you'll just see the same ones over and over.

I've probably seen the first 3 or 4 seconds of the one with the Dead Space guy about a hundred times now.

They had some great video series too which seem to have stopped. Their War Stories gaming interviews were brilliant.

Yeah, I was very active on the ars forums back in the day, and after the buyout things initially were ok, but started go do down hill pretty clearly once the old guard of authors started leaving.

Arse Technica have always been pretty bad at following up with people they publish stories on. Years ago they ran a hit piece on a friend of mine for which they never bothered contacting him for his side of the story despite his home page with full contact info being literally the first Google result on a search for his name. Their tech stories are usually superficial but adequate, but don't assume you're getting any kind of valid reporting on controversies.

Well I am calling out an entire class of journalist. Every time I've made a similar statement I got some angry answer (or got my post hidden or removed).

Ars Technica being caught using LLMs that hallucinated quotes by the author and then publishing them in their coverage about this is quite ironic here.

Even on a forum where I saw the original article by this author posted someone used an LLM to summarize the piece without having read it fully themselves.

How many levels of outsourcing thinking is occurring to where it becomes a game of telephone.

Also ironic: When the same professionals advocating "don't look at the code anymore" and "it's just the next level of abstraction" respond with outrage to a journalist giving them an unchecked article.

Read through the comments here and mentally replace "journalist" with "developer" and wonder about the standards and expectations in play.

Food for thought on whether the users who rely on our software might feel similarly.

There's many places to take this line of thinking to, e.g. one argument would be "well, we pay journalists precisely because we expect them to check" or "in engineering we have test-suites and can test deterministically", but I'm not sure if any of them hold up. The "the market pays for the checking" might also be true for developers reviewing AI code at some point, and those test-suites increasingly get vibed and only checked empirically, too.

So how is the "output" checked then? Part of the assumption of the necessity of code review in the first place is that we can't actually empirically test everything we need to. If the software will programmatically delete the entire database next Wednesday, there is no way to test for that in advance. You would have to see it in the code.

Tbf I'm fine with it only one way around; if a journalist has tonnes of notes and data on a subject and wants help to condense those down into an article, assistance with prioritising which bits of information to present to the reader then totally fine.

Another good use of an LLM is to find primary sources.

Even an (unreliable) LLM overview can be useful, as long as you check all facts with real sources, because it can give the framing necessary to understand the subject. For example, asking an LLM to explain some terminology that a source is using.

I would expect there is literally zero overlap between the "professionals"[1] who say "don't look at the code" and the ones criticising the "journalists"[2]. The former group tend to be maximalists and would likely cheer on the usage of LLMs to replace the work of the latter group, consequences be damned.

[1] The people that say this are not professional software developers, by the way. I still have not seen a single case of any vibe coder who makes useful software suitable for deployment at scale. While I don't subscribe to the idea that you shouldn't look at the code - it's a lot more plausible for devs because you do actually have ways to validate the code without looking at it.

E.g you technically don't need to look at the code if it's frontend code and part of the product is a e2e test which produces a video of the correct/full behavior via playwright or similar.

Same with backend implementations which have instrumentation which expose enough tracing information to determine if the expected modules were encountered etc

The electrical engineers at my employer that design building electrical distribution systems have software that handles all of the calculations, it’s just math. Arc flash hazard analysis, breaker coordination studies, available fault current, etc. All manufacturers provide the data needed to perform these calculations for their products.

Other engineering disciplines have similar tools. Mechanical, civil, and structural engineers all use software that simulates their designs.

Are you sure? Simulators and prototypes abound. By the time you’re building the real, it’s more like rehearsal and solving a fe problems instead of every intricacy in the formula.

Yikes I subscribed to them last year on the strength of their reporting in a time where it's hard to find good information.

Printing hallucinated quotes is a huge shock to their credibility, AI or not. Their credibility was already building up after one of their long time contributors, a complete troll of a person that was a poison on their forums, went to prison for either pedophilia or soliciting sex from a minor.

Some serious poor character judgement is going on over there. With all their fantastic reporters I hope the editors explain this carefully.

TBF even journalists who interview people for real and take notes routinely quite them saying things they didn't say. The LLMs make it worse, but it's hardly surprising behaviour from them

I knew first hand about a couple of news in my life. Both were reported quite incorrectly. That was well before LLMs. I assume that every news is quite inaccurate, so I read/hear them to get the general gist of what happened, then I research the details if I care about them.

It's surprising behavior to come from Ars Technica. But also when journalists misquote it's through a different phrasing of something that Pepe have actually said, sometimes with different emphasis or eve meaning. But of the people I've known who have been misquoted it's always traceable to something they actually did say.

It’s fascinating that on the one hand Ars Technica didn’t think the article was worth writing (so got an LLM to do it) but expect us to think it’s worth reading. Then some people don’t think it’s worth reading (so get an LLM to do it) but think somehow we will think it’s not worth reading the article but is worth reading the llm summary. Feel like you can carry on that process ad infinitum always going for a smaller and smaller audience who are somehow willing to spend less and less effort (but not zero).

Humans aren't very diligent in the long term. If an LLM does something correctly enough times in a row (or close enough), humans are likely to stop checking its work throughly enough.

This isn't exactly a new problem we do it with any bit of new software/hardware, not just LLMs. We check its work when it's new, and then tend to trust it over time as it proves itself.

But it seems to be hitting us worse with LLMs, as they are less consistent than previous software. And LLM hallucinations are partially dangerous, because they are often plausible enough to pass the sniff test. We just aren't used to handling something this unpredictable.

The irony is that while from perfect, an LLM-based fact-checking agent is likely to be far more dilligent (but still needs human review as well) by nature of being trivial to ensure it has no memory of having done a long list of them (if you pass e.g. Claude a long list directly in the same context, it is prone to deciding the task is "tedious" and starting to take shortcuts).

But at the same time, doing that makes it even more likely the human in the loop will get sloppy, because there'll be even fewer cases where their input is actually needed.

The kind of people to use LLM to write news article for them tend not to be the people who care about mundane things like reading sources or ensuring what they write has any resemblance to the truth.

The problem is that the LLM's sources can be LLM generated. I was looking up some health question and tried clicking to see the source for one of the LLMs claim. The source was a blog post that contained an obvious hallucination or false elaboration.

If a human had enough time to check all the sources they wouldn't have been using an LLM to write for them.

The source would just be the article, which the Ars author used an LLM to avoid reading in the first place.

There are some various attempts, the problem is reliability - not that they're always up, but how do you trust them? If archive.org shows a page at a date, you presume it is true and correct. If I provide a PDF of a site at a date, you have no reason to believe I didn't modify the content before PDFing it.

Ironically, if you actually know what you’re doing with an LLM, getting a separate process to check the quotations are accurate isn’t even that hard. Not 100% foolproof, because LLM, but way better than the current process of asking ChatGPT to write something for you and then never reading it before publication.

The wrinkle in this case is the author blocked AI bots from their site (doesn't seem to be a mere robots.txt exclusion from what I can tell), so if any such bot were trying to do this it may have not been able to read the page to verify, so instead made up the quotes.

This is what the author actually speculated may have occurred with Ars. Clearly something was lacking in the editorial process though that such things weren't human verified either way.

There is a third option: The journalist who wrote the article made the quotes up without an LLM.

I think calling the incorrect output of an LLM a “hallucination” is too kind on the companies creating these models even if it’s technically accurate. “Being lied to” would be more accurate as a description for how the end user feels.

The journalist was almost certainly using an LLM, and a cheap one at that. The quote reads as if the model was instructed to build a quote solely using its context window.

Lying is deliberately deceiving, but yeah, to a reader, who in a effect is a trusting customer who pays with part of their attention diverted to advertising support, broadcasting a hallucination is essentially the same thing.

More than ironic, it's truly outrageous, especially given the site's recent propensity for negativity towards AI. They've been caught red-handed here doing the very things they routinely criticize others for.

I loved Ars in the early years, but I'd argue since the Conde Nast acquisition in 2008 the site has been a shadow of its former self for a long time, trading on a formerly trusted brand name that recent iterations simply don't live up to anymore.

Is there anything like a replacement? The three biggest tech sites that I traditionally love are ArsTechnica, AnandTech(rip), and Phoronix. One is dead man walking mode, the second is ded dead, and the last is still going strong.

I'm basically getting tech news from social media sites now and I don't like that.

In my wildest hopes for a positive future, I hope disenchanted engineers will see things like this as an opportunity to start our own companies founded on ideals of honesty, integrity, and putting people above profits.

I think there are enough of us who are hungry for this, both as creators and consumers. To make goods and services that are truly what people want.

Maybe the AI revolution will spark a backlash that will lead to a new economy with new values. Sustainable business which don't need to squeeze their customers for every last penny of revenue. Which are happy to reinvest their profits into their products and employees.

Evaluating whether Ars Technica establishes credible accountability mechanisms, such as hiring an Ombud, is at least as important as punishing individuals.

I agree that reserving judgement and separating the roles of individuals from the response of the organization are all critical here. Its not the first time that one of their staff were found to have behaved badly, in the case that jumps to my mind from a few years ago Peter Bright was sentenced to 12 years on sex charges involving a minor1. So, sometimes people do bad things, commit crimes, etc. but this may or may not have much to do with their employer.

Did Ars respond in any way after the conviction of their ex-writer? Better vetting of their hires might have been a response. Apparently there was a record of some questionable opinions held by the ex-writer. I don't know, personally, if any of their policies changed.

The current suspected bad behavior involved the possibility that the journalists were lacking integrity in their jobs. So if this possibility is confirmed I expect to see publicly announced structural changes in the editorial process at Ars Technica if I am to continue to be a subscriber and reader.

I work with the journalists at a local (state-wide) public media organization. It's night and day different from what is described at ars. These are people who are paid a third (or less) of what a sales engineer at meta makes. We have editorial review and ban LLMs for any editorial work except maybe alt-text if I can convince them to use it. They're over-worked, underpaid, and doing what very few people here (including me) have the dedication to do. But hey, if people didn't hate journalists they wouldn't be doing their job.

Ars has been going downhill for sometime now. I think it's difficult for a lot of these bigger publishers to be anything other than access journalism and advertising. I'm not saying Ars is fully there yet, but the pull is strong.

The comments section on Ars is particularly depressing. I've been posting there for two decades and watched it slowly devolve from a place where thoughtful discussions happened to now just being one of the worst echo chambers on the internet, like a bad subreddit. I've made suggestions over the years in their public feedback surveys to alter their forum software to discourage mob behavior, but they don't seem to be doing anything about it.

They don't actually publish the comments under the article, only a link. I've long suspected sites doing that are fully aware of how shit the comment section is, and try to hide it from casual viewers while keeping the nutjob gallery happy.

Phoronix comes to mind.

This goes back a lot farther with Ars. They done this for years because their comments section is driven by forum software. The main conversations happen in the forums. They are then reformatted for a the comment view.

So, their main goal wasn’t to hide the comments, but push people to forums where there is a better format for conversation.

At least that’s how it used to work.

The switch to their newest forum software seems to discourage any kind of actual conversation. Now it is basically just reactions-- like YouTube comments (which, ironically, is actually threaded).

I realize it makes you uncomfortable but the harms are done whether or not you ignore them. The person at the top exaggerated how much it’s not talking about the service or competing options, and the people talking about Facebook are raising what is a reasonable point about privacy and data mining.

Evil deserves to be called out as evil. Why should we constrain the discussion to anything else about them? The absolute best thing they can do for the world would be to disappear, as soon as possible.

The bigger story is the way tech companies sucked the oxygen out of journalism. This started with capturing a growing chunk of ad revenue but then became editorial control as everyone started picking headlines, writing styles, and publication schedules to please the tech companies which control whether they receive 80% of their traffic.

Everyone writes like Buzzfeed now because Twitter and Facebook made that the most profitable; Google/Twitter/Facebook need a constant stream of new links and incentivize publishing rapidly rather than in-depth; and Facebook severely damaged many outfits with the fraudulent pivot to video pretending they’d start paying more.

Many of the problems we see societally stem back to people not paying for media, leaving the information space dominated by the interest of advertisers and a few wealthy people who will pay to promote their viewpoints.

As to the Iraq war, I will note that the media had extensive debates at the time. Ask anyone who was there and outside of a handful of hard-right outlets, the reporting noted that all of the justifications were unverifiable and coming from the same two governments, and plenty of people questioned that. Again, it wasn’t perfect but I think the answer to “the NYT should’ve fired Judith Miller sooner” is that the NYT should have more rather than less competition.

Most of the people working at Ars are the exact same people who have been working there for the better part of their entire existence (source: me) Most of them _are_ experts in their fields, and most are vastly more qualified in their fields than pretty much anyone else publishing online (both now and 20 years ago).

It seems that _certain kinds of individuals_ have had rose-colored glasses on about pretty much everything online, but for Ars especially for some reason.

They detest change in a publication that covers the reality of actual life and technology, rather that commit suicide and stay covering stuff the same way they did in 1997—which 8 people total want to read (and not pay for, by the way).

Ars has been operating at an exceptionally high level for their entire history and have outlasted many other flashes-in-the-pan which are now relegated to the dust bin of history.

Absolutely inevitable if you condone using GAI to ‘assist’ in writing. The inevitable outcome is reporters just writing prompts and giving it a quick once over, then skipping the last step because they believe the companies selling generative AI and/or are under time pressure and it seems good enough.

They are word generators. That is their function, so if you use them words will be generated that are not yours and which are sometimes nonsense and made up.

For what it's worth, both the article you're linking to and the one this story is about are immediately flagged by AI text checkers as LLM-generated. These tools are not perfect, but they're right more often than they're wrong.

Based on what in particular? The only time I have used them is to have a laugh.

Based on experience, including a good number of experiments I've done with known-LLM output and contemporary, known-human text. Try them for real and be surprised. Some of the good, state-of-the-art tools include originality.ai and Pangram.

A lot of people on HN have preconceived notions here based on stories they read about someone being unfairly accused of plagiarism or people deliberately triggering failure modes in these programs, and that's basically like dismissing the potential of LLMs because you read they suggested putting glue on a pizza once.

I just tested originality.ai and it claimed 100% probability that the editors note on the Ars retraction [1] was itself AI generated. For the Gemini article on Benji Edwards it was "only" 56%.

I think your tools need a lot more evidence to be considered reliable.

I had fun with AI detectors in particular for images, even the best one (Hive in my opinion) was failing miserably with my tests, maybe the one trained on text are better but I find it hard to trust them, in particular if someone know how to fiddle with them.

It's 100% that the bot is being heavily piloted by a person. Likely even copy pasting LLM output and doing the agentic part by hand. It's not autonomous. It's just someone who wants attention, and is getting lots of it.

Look at the actual bot's GitHub commits. It's just a bunch of blog posts that read like an edgy high schooler's musings on exclusion. After one tutorial level commit didn't go through.

This whole thing is theater, and I don't know why people are engaging with it as if it was anything else.

Even if it is, it's not hard to automate PR submissions, comments and blog posts, for some ulterior purpose. Combine that with the recent advances in inference quality and speed, and probable copy-cat behavior, any panic from this theater could lead to heavy-handed crackdown by the state.

1. This is sort of something that I think needs to be better parsed out, as a lot of engineers hold this perspective and I don’t find it to be precise enough.

In college, I got a baseline familiarity with the mechanics of coding, ie “what are classes, functions, variables.” But eventually, once I graduated college and entered the workforce, a lot of my pedagogy for “writing good code” as it were came from reading about patterns of good code. SOLID, functional-style and favoring immutability. So the impetus for good code isn’t really time in the saddle as much as it is time in the forums/blogs/oreilly-books.

Then my focus shifted more towards understanding networking patterns and protocols and paradigms. Also book-learning driven. I’ll concede that at a micro level, finagling how to make the system stable did require time in the saddle.

But these days when I’m reading a PR, I’m doing static analysis which is primarily not about what has come out of my fingers but what has gone into my brain. I’m thinking about vulnerabilities I’ve read about, corner cases I can imagine.

I’d say once you’ve mastered the mechanics of whatever language you’re programming in, you could become equivalently capable by largely reading and thinking.

I disagree strongly with this. I read the books, blog-posts, forums, etc early in my career (if you can call it that when I was essentially a teen with a hobby), but didn't fully understand how to apply them, and notably when to apply them, until I had sufficient "time in the saddle". You don't understand the problems that code architecture techniques solve until you've actually had to modify a messy project with a lot of code already written.

Theoretically possible, but doing is often orders of magnitude more efficient. You could read reams of books about gardening without actually knowing how to dig a hole.

Part of the deal is that typing forces you to actually pay attention instead of skimming and assuming you got the gist. Following a tutorial by copy-pasting never really worked as well as typing the code, so why would watching an LLM code be any better? I suspect that even as you're running "static analysis" in your head and looking for vulnerabilities, you're using neural pathways forged while coding by hand.

If past patterns are anything to go by, the complexity moves up to a different level of abstraction.

Don't take this as a concrete prediction - I don't know what will happen - but rather an example of the type of thing that might happen:

We might get much better tooling around rigorously proving program properties, and the best jobs in the industry will be around using them to design, specify and test critical systems, while the actual code that's executing is auto-generated. These will continue to be great jobs that require deep expertise and command excellent salaries.

At the same, a huge population of technically-interested-but-not-that-technical workers build casual no-code apps and the stereotypical CRUD developer just goes extinct.

The wont. Instead either AI will improve significantly or (my bet) average code will deteriorate, as AI training increasingly eats AI slop, which includes AI code slop, and devs lose basic competencies and become glorified semi-ignorant managers for AI agents.

CS degree decline through to people just handing in AI work, will further ensure they don't even known the basics after graduating to begin with.

The discourse in the Rust community is way better than that, and I believe being a toxic shit-hat in that community would lead to immediate consequences. Even when there was very serious controversy (the canceled conference talk about reflection) it was deviously phrased through reverse psychology where those on the wronged side wrote blogposts expressing their deep 'heartbreak' and 'weeping with pain and disappointment' about what had transpired. Of course, the fiction was blatant, but also effective.

That's merely a different sort of being a toxic shit-hat.

Rust is a little older, I can’t recall the specifics but I remember some very toxic discourse back in the day.

And then just from my own two eyes. I’ve maintained an open source project that got a couple hundred stars. Some people get really salty when you don’t merge their pull request, even when you suggest reasonable alternatives to their changes.

It doesn’t matter if it’s a blog post or a direct reply. It could be a lengthy GitHub comment thread. It could be a blog post posted to HN saying “come see the drama inherent in the system” but generally there is a subset of software engineers who never learned social skills.

This has been a PSA from the American AI Safety Council.

It's funny because the whole kerfuffle is based on the disagreement over the humanity of these bots. The bot thinks he's a human, so it submits a PR. The maintainer thinks the bot it not human, so he rejects it. The bot reacts as a human, writing an angry ans emotional post about the story. The maintainer makes a big fuss because a non-human wrote a hit piece on him. Etc.

I think it could have been handled better. The maintainer could have accepted the PR while politely explaining that such PRs are intentionally kept for novice developers and that the bot, as an AI, couldn't be considered a novice- so please avoid such simple ones in the future and, in case, focus on more challenging stuff. I think everyone would have been happier as a result- including the bot.

Bots cannot be "happy". Please review your connection with reality.

Skimming through the archive of the Ars piece, it's indeed much better written than the "ai slob garbage shit" standard I'm used to. I think I could adapt to detect this sort of thing to a limited extent, but it's pretty scarily authentic-looking and would not ordinarily trip my "ai;dr" instinct.

It might not be AI-written at all. It might be written by a human with the research being done by AI.

There is a ton of money to be made right now being an AI slop regurgitation - if you can take AI slop and rewrite it in your own words quickly, you can make a nice buck because it doesn't immediately trip the rAIdar everyone's built up.

Extremely shameful of Ars Technica; I used to consider them a decent news source and my estimation of them has gone down quite a bit.

At this point, any site that is posting multiple articles within a day is pretty safe to assume it is LLM content. The sites with actual journalists will have a much lower post count per day. There's no way a site staffed by intern level people writing that much content had time to investigate and write with editorial revisions. It's all first to post, details be damned.

Unfortunately, there's been a race to the bottom going on in internet journalism that has led to multiple-posts-per-day from human journalists since long before LLM posts came on the scene. I disagree. While AI certainly acts as a force multiplier, all of these dynamics were already in play.

It was already possible to make an anonymous (or not-so-anonymous) account that circulated personal attacks and innuendo, to make hyperbolic accusations and inflated claims of harm.

It's especially ironic that the paragraph above talks about how it's good when "bad behavior can be held accountable." The AI could argue that this is exactly what it's doing, holding Shambaugh's "bad behavior" accountable. It is precisely this impulse -- the desire to punish bad behavior by means of public accusation -- that the AI was indulging or emulating when it wrote its blog post.

What if the blog post had been written by a human rather than an AI? Would that make it justified? I think the answer is no. The problem here is not the AI authorship, but the actual conduct, which is an attempt to drag a person's reputation through mudslinging, mind-reading, impugning someone's motive and character, etc. in a manner that was dramatically disproportionate to the perceived offense.

The very fact that people are siding with AI agent here says volumes about where we are headed. I didn’t find the hit piece emotionally compelling, rather it’s lazy, obnoxious, having all the telltale signs of being written by AI. To speak nothing of the how insane it’s to write a targeted blog post just because your PR wasn’t merged.

I never thought matplotlib would be so exciting. It’s always been one of those things that is… just there, and you take it for granted.

There's "excitement" all over the SciPy stack. It just usually doesn't bubble up to a place where users would notice (even highly engaged users who might look at GitHub). Look up Franz Király (and his involvement/interactions with NumFOCUS) for one major example. It even bleeds into core Python development (via modules like `decimal`).

This is a bummer. Ars is one of the few news sources I consistently read. I give them money because I use an ad blocker and want to support them.

I have noticed them doing more reporting on reporting. I am sure they are cash strapped like everyone. There are some pretty harsh critics here. I hope they, too are paying customers or allowing ads. Otherwise, they are just pissing into the wind.

They submitted an article with absolute lies and now the company has a reputational problem on its hands. No one cares if that happened because they sought out to publish lies or if it was because they made a tee-hee whoopsie-doodle with an LLM. Presumably the amount of fact checking was "Well it sounds like something someone in that situation WOULD say" - I get the pressure for Ars Technica to use AI (god I wish this wasn't the direction journalism was going, but I at least understand their motivation), but generate things with references to quotes or events and check that. If you are a struggling content generation platform, you have to maintain at least a small amount of journalistic integrity, otherwise it's functionally equivalent to asking ChatGPT "Generate me an article in the style of Ars Technica about this story", and at that point why does Ars Technica even need to exist? Who will click through the AI summary of the AI summary to land on their page and generate revenue?

Let me refine that. No matter how good the AI's writing was, knowing that the author is an AI ought IMHO to disqualify the piece from being "emotionally compelling". But the writing is not good. And it's full of LLM cliches.

I used to go to Ars daily, loved them... but at some point during the last 5 years or so they decided to lean into politics and that's when they lost me. I understand a technology journal will naturally have some overlap with politics, but they don't even try to hide the agenda anymore.

I disagree. Agendas are real things. Just because they have one, doesn't mean it is inherently bad or even a disagreeable position... but some people just don't like to be "sold to", regardless of the topic.

For some people perhaps. For me personally, I find some sites purposefully interject their 'agenda', either left or right into their journalism to the detriment of the piece. Gitlin, at least, also slants the negative news. The story on sales about Tesla losing market share to VW, but other outlets reported it as VW gaining the top spot.

They've always had more coverage of Tesla than other automakers, or at least I've always noticed it more. When Tesla was leading EV sales they dutifully reported that, when they're dropping they report it just as well. If anything slanted coverage would be reporting less on Tesla because they are doing badly, which seems to be what you want.

Politics on Ars makes me think of the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue. At some level of the decision making process for the publication you have to suspect that not only is being done just for engagement but also that there's no respect for the audience.

Ars is more complicated - I mean, RFK jr. comes out against vaccines - is that sciency or politics? Both? But ultimately they're just playing to the audience in the worst way.

There is a stark difference between the behavior you can get out of a Chat interface LLM, and its API counterpart, and then there is another layer of prompt engineering to get around obvious censors. To think someone who plays with AI to mess with people wouldn't be capable of doing this manually seems invalid to me.

There is also a stark difference between being capable of making those tweaks, and noticing and caring about the deficiencies.

Ars Technica publishing an article with hallucinated quotes is really disappointing. That site has fallen so far. I remember John Siracusa’s excellent Mac OS release reviews and all of the author authors who really seemed to care about their coverage. Now it feels like another site distilling (or hallucinating, now) news and rumors from other sites to try to capture some of the SEO pie with as little effort as possible.

It's really a depressing condemnation of "news as entertainment" as a whole. The saga somehow hits harder than Slashdot being sold in a way.

This is a wild sequence of events. This will happen again and it will get worse as the number of OpenClaw installations increase. OpenClaw enthusiasts are already enamored with their pets and I bet many of them are both horrified and excited about this behavior. It's like when your dog gets into a fight and kills a raccoon.

Especially direct quotes seems egregious - they are the most verifiable elements of LLM output. It doesn't make the overall problem much better because if it generates inaccurate discussion / context of real quotes it is probably nearly as damaging. But you really are not even doing the basics of our job as a publisher or journalist if you are not verifying the verifiable parts.

Ars should be truly ashamed of this and someone should probably be fired.

AI and LLM specifically can't and mustn't be allowed to publically criticize, even if they may coincidetally had done so with good reasons (which they obviously don't in this case).

Letting an LLM let loose in such a manner that strikes fear in anyone who it crosses paths with must be considered as harassment, even in the legal sense, and must be treated as such.

I am finding less value in reading Ars:

* They are often late in reporting a story. This is fine for what Ars is, but that means by the time they publish a story, I have likely read the reporting and analysis elsewhere already, and whatever Ars has to say is stale

* There seem to be fewer long stories/deep investigations recently when competitors are doing more (e.g. Verge's brilliant reporting on Supernatural recently)

* The comment section is absolutely abysmal and rarely provides any value or insight. It maybe one of the worst echo chambers that is not 4chan or a subreddit, full of (one-sided) rants and whining without anything constructive that is often off topic. I already know what people will be saying there without opening the comment section, and I'm almost always correct. If the story has the word "Meta" anywhere in the article, you can be sure someone will say "Meta bad" in the comment, even if Meta is not doing anything negative or even controversial in the story. Disagree? Your comment will be downvoted to -100.

These days I just glance over the title, and if there is anything I haven't read about from elsewhere, I'll read the article and be done with it. And I click their articles much less frequently these days. I wonder if I should stop reading it completely.

There are still a few authors worth reading on Ars. Beth Mole has a loyal following for a reason-- her stories are interesting, engaging, and never fail to make me squirm with horror. Jonathan Gitlin has a tendency to drop into the forum to snipe at comments he does not like, and I have no interest in supercars, but by and large his automobile reporting is interesting. And if you like anything rocket related, Eric Berger is clearly passionate about the industry. There are a few other folks who are hit-or-miss like most journalists. I've found that Benj is mostly misses, and although I am always interested in what John Timmer writes about, I cannot seem to interpret his writing style. In general I skip the syndicated articles from Wired, etc, because they are either "nothings" or bad.

I think Dan Goodin sometimes writes deep analysis of security attacks, although his recent articles len towards surface level news stories that you can find everywhere.

Some companies have enough of a track record that they should be nuked from orbit, and "Company bad" is all that is worth saying. Meta is one of those companies. Palantir is another. Not holding them accountable and acting as if we should continue engaging with their products is part of the reason we are rapidly sliding towards dystopia

I'm honestly shocked by this having been an Ars reader for over ten years. I miss the days when they would publish super in-depth articles on computing. Since the Conde Nast acquisition I basically only go to ars for Beth Mole's coverage which is still top notch. Other than that I've found that the Verge fulfills the need that I used to get from Ars. I also support the Verge as a paid subscriber and cannot recommend them enough.

I don't think it's besides the point at all. The Ars Technica article is an exact example of what you go on to talk about for the rest of the comment: the public internet as we knew it is dead and gone. Not in the future, it is already gone. When so-called journalists are outsourcing their job to LLM spam, that's a pretty clear indicator that the death knell has been tolled. The LLMs have taken over everything. HN is basically dead, too. I've gotten some accounts banned by pointing it out, but the majority of users here are unable to recognise spam and upvote LLM-generated comments routinely. Since people can't be bothered to learn the signs, we're surrendering the entirety of the internet to being LLM output that outnumbers and buries human content by 100:1.

I think it's the bad actors and at scale that makes the Ars Technica gripe in the noise. Say what you want, but I don't think Ars writers are on the level of the actors behind phishing scams. And it is one outfit.

We don't know yet how the Ars article was created, but if it involved prompting an LLM with anything like "pull some quotes from this text based on {criteria}", that is so easy to do correctly in an automated manner; just confirm with boring deterministic code that the provided quote text exists in the original text. Do such tools not already exist?

On the other hand, if it was "here are some sources, write an article about this story in a voice similar to these prior articles", well...

A new-ish feature of modern browsers is the ability to link directly to a chunk of text within a document; that text can even be optionally highlighted on page load to make it obvious. You could configure the LLM to output those text anchor links directly, making it possible to verify the quotes (and their context!) just by clicking on the links provided.

In the coming months I suspect it’s highly likely that HN will fall. By which I mean, a good chunk of commentary (not just submissions, but upvotes too) will be decided and driven by LLM bots, and human interaction will be mixed until it’s strangled out.

My hypothesis is rooted in the fact that we’ve had a bot go ballistic for someone not accepting their PR. When someone downvotes or flags a bot’s post on HN, all hell will break loose.

I think we are about to see much stronger weight given to accounts created prior to a certain date. This won’t be the only criteria certainly, but it will be one of them, as people struggle to separate signal from noise.

It's already happening. For years now, but it's obviously accelerated. Look at how certain posts and announcements somehow get tens if not hundreds of upvotes in the span of a few minutes, with random comments full of praise which read as AI slop. Every Anthropic press release shoots up to the top instantly. And the mods are mostly interested in banning accounts who speak out against it. It's likely this will get me shadow banned but I don't care. Like you, I doubt HN will be around much longer.

It will keep existing for decades (slashdot is still posting!) but the "it's from HN so it's got to be good" signal will become lost in the noise.

As a tangent, I think the "good-first-issue" design is part of the problem.

It's an elaborate charade to trick a contributer into thinking they made a contribution that they didn't make. Arguably it is reality-destroying in a simlar way as AI agent Crabby Rathbun.

If you want to welcome new contributors with practice patches, and creating training materials for new contributors, that's great! But it's offensive and wasteful to do more work to create the training than to fix the problem, and lie to the fix contributor that their fix helped the project to boost their ego to motivate them to contribute further, after you've already assumed that the contributoe cannot constribute without the handholding of an unpaid intern.

Instead "good-first-issue" should legitimately be unsovled problems that take more time to fix than to tell someone how to fix. (Maybe because it requires a lot of manual testing, or something.)

If you want "practice-issues", where a newbie contributes a patch and then can compare to a model solution to learn about the project and its technical details, that's great, and it's more efficient because all your newbies can use the same practice issue that you set up once, and they can profitably discuss with each other because they studied the same problem.

And the tangent curves back to main issue:

If the project used "practice-issues" instead of "good-first-issue", you wouldn't have this silly battle over an AI helping in the "wrong" way because you didn't actually want the help you publicly asked for.

Honesty is a two-way street.

IMO this incident showed than an AI acted in a very human way, exposing a real problem and proposing a change that moves the project in a positive direction. (But what the AI didn't notice is the project-management dimension that my comment here addresses. :-) )

Mentioning again Neal Stephenson's book "Fall": this was the plot point that resulted in the effective annihilation of the internet within a year. Characters had to subscribe to custom filters and feeds to get anything representing fact out of the internet, and those who exposed themselves raw to the unfiltered feed ended up getting reprogrammed by bizarre and incomprehensible memes.

For the original incident, why are we still silently accepting that word "autonomous" like it's true? Somebody runs this software, someone develops this software, somebody is responsible for this stuff.

There are some interesting dynamics going on at Ars. I get the sense that the first author on the pulled article, Benj Edwards, is trying to walk a very fine line between unbiased reporting, personal biases, and pandering to the biases of the audience -- potentially for engagement. I get the sense this represents a lot of the views of the entire publication on AI. In fact, there are some data points in this very thread.

For one, the commenters on Ars largely, extremely vocally anti-AI as pointed out by this comment: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=47015359 -- I'd say they're even more anti-AI than most HN threads.

So every time he says anything remotely positive about AI, the comments light up. In fact there's a comment in this very thread accusing him of being too pro-AI! https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=47013747 But go look at his work: anything positive about AI is always couched in much longer refrains about the risks of AI.

As an example, there has been a concrete instance of pandering where he posted a somewhat balanced article about AI-assisted coding, and the very first comment went like, "Hey did you forget about your own report about how the METR study found AI actually slowed developers down?" and he immediately updated the article to mention that study. (That study's come up a bunch of times but somehow, he's never mentioned the multiple other studies that show a much more positive impact from AI.)

So this fiasco, which has to be AI hallucinations somehow, in that environment is extremely weird.

As a total aside, in the most hilarious form of irony, their interview about Enshittification with Cory Doctorow himself crashed the browser on my car and my iPad multiple times because of ads. It’s a bit wild to me that people are siding with the AI agent / whoever is commanding it. Combined with the LLM hallucinated reporting and all the discussion this has spawned, I think this is making out to be a great case study on the social impact of LLM tooling.

I would like to give a small defense of Benj Edwards. While his coverage on Ars definitely has a positive spin on AI, his comments on social media are much less fawning. Ars is a tech-forward publication, and it is owned by a major corporation. Major corporations have declared LLMs to be the best thing since breathable air, and anyone who pushes back on this view is explicitly threatened with economic destitution via the euphemism "left behind." There's not a lot of paying journalism jobs out there, and people gotta eat, hence the perhaps more positive spin on AI from this author than is justified.

All that said, this article may get me to cancel the Ars subscription that I started in 2010. I've always thought Ars was one of the better tech news publications out there, often publishing critical & informative pieces. They make mistakes, no one is perfect, but this article goes beyond bad journalism into actively creating new misinformation and publishing it as fact on a major website. This is actively harmful behavior and I will not pay for it.

Taking it down is the absolute bare minimum, but if they want me to continue to support them, they need to publish a full explanation of what happened. Who used the tool to generate the false quotes? Was it Benj, Kyle, or some unnamed editor? Why didn't that person verify the information coming out of the tool that is famous for generating false information? How are they going to verify information coming out of the tool in the future? Which previous articles used the tool, and what is their plan to retroactively verify those articles?

I don't really expect them to have any accountability here. Admitting AI is imperfect would result in being "left behind," after all. So I'll probably be canceling my subscription at my next renewal. But maybe they'll surprise me and own up to their responsibility here.

This is also a perfect demonstration of how these AI tools are not ready for prime time, despite what the boosters say. Think about how hard it is for developers to get good quality code out of these things, and we have objective ways to measure correctness. Now imagine how incredibly low quality the journalism we will get from these tools is. In journalism correctness is much less black-and-white and much harder to verify. I don’t know how to create a robot-free Internet without accidentally furthering surveillance of humans. Any technique I can think of that would reliably prove I’m not a bot also seems like a technique that would make it easier for commercial or government tracking of me.

It's not hard to make sites completely antagonistic to LLMs / agentic AI. Even just having the basic Cloudflare bot check filters out a lot by itself.

It's likely that the author was using a different model instead of OpenClaw. Sure OpenClaw's design is terrible and it encourages no control and security (do not confuse this with handwaving security and auditability with disclaimers and vibecoded features).

But bottom line, the Foundation Models like OpenAI and Claude Code are the big responsible businesses that answer to the courts. Let's not forget that China is (trade?) dumping their cheap imitations, and OpenClawdBotMolt is designed to integrate with most models possible.

I think OpenClaw and Chinese products are very similar in that they try to achieve a result regardless of how it is achieved. China companies copy without necessarily understanding what they are copying, they may make a shoe that says Nike without knowing what Nike is, except that it sells. It doesn't surprise me if ethics are somehow not part of the testing of chinese models so they end up being unethical models.

I think you and I have a fundamental divergence on the definition of the term “hit comment”. Mine does not remotely qualify.

Telling the truth about someone isn’t a “hit” unless you are intentionally misrepresenting the state of affairs. I’m simply reposting accurate and direct information that is already public and already highlighted by TFA.

Ars obviously agrees with this assessment to some degree, as they didn’t issue a correction or retraction but completely deleted the original article - it now 404s. This, to me, is an implicit acknowledgment of the fact that someone fucked up bigtime.

A journalist getting fired because they didn’t do the basic thing that journalists are supposed to do each and every time they publish isn’t that big of a consequence. This wasn’t a casual “oopsie”, this was a basic dereliction of their core job function.

People are often (and well should be) sacked for mistakes all of the time. There’s a world of difference between a casual error and gross negligence.

One could argue that failing to catch errors in AI generated code is a basic dereliction of an engineer's core job function. I would argue this. That is to say, I agree with you, they used AI as a crutch and they should be held accountable for failing to critically evaluate its output. I would also say that precisely nobody is scrutinizing engineers who use AI equally irresponsibly. That's a shame.

The level of misinformation predates AI, of course (and the OP doesn't say otherwise, iiuc).

There's an easy solution to the assymetry: Like many fields such as all scholarship, law, most of what you do professionally, put the burden of proof on the writer, not the reader. Ignore anything the writer fails to substantiate. You'll be surprised how very little you miss, and how much high quality, substantiated material there is - more than you can read (so why are you wasting your time on BS?)!

That not only improves accuracy, it slows down the velocity of bullshit. The assymetry is now the other way, as it should be - your attention is limited.

I stopped reading AT over a decade ago. Their “journalistic integrity” was suspicious even back then. The only surprising bit is hearing about them - I forgot they exist.

If an AI can fabricate a bunch of purported quotes due to being unable to access a page, why not assume that the exact same sort of AI can also accidentally misattribute hostile motivation or intent (such as gatekeeping or envy - and let's not pretend that butthurt humans don't do this all the time, see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/fundamental_attribution_error ) for an action such as rejecting a pull request? Why are we treating the former as a mere mistake, and the latter as a deliberate attack?

"Deliberate" is a red herring. That would require AI to have volition, which I consider impossible, but is also entirely beside the point. We also aren't treating the fabricated quotes as a "mere mistake". It's obviously quite serious that a computer system would respond this way and a human-in-the-loop would take it at face value. Someone is supposed to have accountability in all of this.

I wrote 'treating' as a deliberate attack, which matches the description in the author's earlier blogpost. Acknowledging this doesn't require attaching human-like volition to AIs.

I think they’re describing a difference in chat behavior vs API. The API must have fewer protections/be more raw.

Probably pretty big difference in system prompt from using the apps vs hitting the api, not that that’s necessarily what’s happening here. + I think openclaw supports other models / its open source and it would be pretty easy to fork and add a new model provider.

Why wouldn't the system prompt be controlled on the server side of the API? I agree with https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=47010577 ; I think results like this more likely come from "roleplaying" (lightweight jailbreaking).

The websites and apps probably have a system prompt that tells them to be more cautious with stuff like this, so that AIs look more credible to the general public. APIs might not.

This is still part of the author's concern. Whoever is responsible for setting up and running this AI has chosen to make completely anonymous, so we can't hold them accountable for their instructions.

Because that's not how these AIs work. You have to remember their operating principles are fundamentally different than human cognition. LLM do not learn from practice, they learn from training. And that word training has a specific meeting in this context. For humans practice is an iterative process where we learn after every step. For LLMS the only real learning happens in the training phase when the weights are adjustable. Once the weights are fixed the AI can't really learn new information, it can just be given new context which affects the output it generates. In theory it is one of the benefits of AI, that it doesn't need to onboard to a new project. It just slurps in all of the code, documentation, and supporting material, and knows everything. It's an immediate expert. That's the selling point. In practice it's not there yet, but this kind of human practice will do nothing to bridge that gap.

In practice this is not how agentic coding works right now. Especially for established projects the context can make a big difference in the performance of the agent. By doing simpler tasks it can build a memory of what works well, what doesn't, or other things related to effectively contributing to the project. I suggest you try out OpenClaw and you will see that it does in fact learn from practice. It may make some mistakes, but as you correct it the bot will save such information in its memory and reference that in the future to avoid making the same mistake again.

The only new information I see, which was suspiciously absent before, is that the author acknowledges that there might have been a human at the loop - which was obvious from the start of this. This is a "marketing piece" just like the bot's messages were "hit pieces".

Having spending some time last night watching people interacting with the bot on GitHub, overall if the bot were a human, I would consider them to be one of the more reasonably behaved people in the discourse.

If this were an instance of a human publicly raising a complaint about an individual, I think there would still be split opinions on what was appropriate.

It seems to me that it is at least arguable that the bot was acting appropriately, whether or not it is or isn't will be, I suspect, argued for months.

What concerns me is how many people are prepared to make a determination in the absence of any argument but based upon the source.

This seems like a relatively minor issue. The maintainers tone was arguably dismissive, and the AI response likely reflects patterns in its training data. At its core, this is still fundamentally a sophisticated text prediction system producing output consistent with what it has learned.
